Animation Study
The following animations were created during a five-month independent analog animation study, and a simultaneous digital animation course. I learned a lot about movement, character design, effective animation workflow, and storytelling. My drawing skills improved through practice, and I gained a lot of knowledge from reading both The Animator's Survival Kit and The Illusion of Life (two of the best books out there on animation).
I learned how to use Adobe Photoshop to animate, and I altered and improved animations when needed with After Effects, Premiere, and Illustrator.

Music Video: “Sound of Ataris” by Kimya Dawson
Shown at the CU Boulder ATLAS Spring 2019 Expo
I created this music video for one of my favorite songs by the beautifully unique, strong singer-songwriter, Kimya Dawson. The style was inspired by the mood a lot of her songs emit - cute, awkward, and devastatingly dark. This was one of the first full-fledged characters and stories I created in my study.
“Hiraeth”
Shown at a CU Spring 2019 Student Showcase
Hiraeth is a Welsh word that means nostalgia and longing for an era or place that you cannot return to. I layered shots of childhood objects with voice messages I received years ago from family to create a feeling of nostalgia an sadness. Everything was shot on 16mm TriX Reversal using a Bolex camera to emphasize a feeling of the past. Hand developed and edited on a old-school Steinbeck.
Fargo Title Sequence Reimagined
I recreated the title sequence from Fargo, because the original was one of my favorite opening sequences of all time. I wanted to give the video the simplicity and desolation the film is famous for, but to experiment with animation at the same time. This recreation is an illustration of the images the opening song evokes when I hear it.
“Sketch”
Sketch is an animation I created to practice rotoscoping human movement and personality. I wanted to focus on overall walk cycles, but I also was interested in magnifying tiny movements and details, like someone sketching in a notebook, or turning their head to look at a passerby.
